How is the school system in Milton?

Looking for a house in Milton and wanted to know what do you think of the school system there. Do they have good rates? If you live in Milton, does your children automatically go to the Milton's public schools if you sign them up?

Re: How is the school system in Milton?

Milton is an awesome town, was just voted one of best places to live. I just sold a young family a home there who loves the school system. Some of the residents use private schools, but overall the rankings are quite good.

Let me know if you need anything.

Re: How is the school system in Milton?

It is gross when realtors ignore reality for a sale.  Milton is far from "awesome" and even farther from the singular and inacurate poll of a few years ago. The truth is  that the town borders Mattapan, one of the most crime filled, dangerous areas of Boston.  The parts of Milton that are directly on the border of Mattapan are seeing a problematic overflow of drugs, prostitution and other crime in Milton.  I would never live or raise children in those areas. This is also causing an unpleasant racial divide (rich, white people live in one part of the town). The public schools do a French immersion program which sounds great but the program is not really full time and therefore does not produce really billingual kids.  Not to mention, French being a sort of odd choice for a second language.  The town also seems to suffer from some sort of finacial mismanagment.  The are often major cuts in the schools resulting in no art or parents paying hefty fees for sports yet the next year a new school will be built.  You also pay for each separate bag of trash that is taken from your house.  This requires a sticker on each bag -it is weird and annoying.

That is most likely true. Hopefully people will take a reply from a realtor with a grain or salt and realize they are just trying to make sales. Milton has few bargains anyway, unless you want to live on the Mattapan line.

Re: How is the school system in Milton?

The school committee here highlights the positives of course, but this town's graduating class can't really get into ivy leagues. I have three children attending school here. I too moved to this "elite" town hoping for the most challenging education for my kids, but so far, I'm disappointed at their middle school. My daughter attends sixth grade and to date, she's had open book exams in science and math and study guides in English class that mimic the actual test. How lenient can the teachers get? I wrote to the principal before Thanksgiving and got a response. I wrote again after Christmas break and got no response. Their elementary schools so far are ok. My other daughter's in the French immersion program, and I think she'd be better off just sticking to English if I had to choose again. They take French for two years only and then back to the regular curriculum. I'm sure she'll forget her "quelle heure est t'il" by fifth grade.

Once the Twon finishes building the 12 foot wall on the Mattapan line, things will improve
