Is Swarthmore/Wallingford/Media a very diverse area with open-minded individuals?

Absolutely, yes.  This area boasts award-winning schools that are heavy into art/music/cultural appreciation.  The area is becoming somewhat of a melting pot, with certain areas being more diverse than others.  Communities are supportive and open minded, welcoming differences.  I have been working in this area for some time now, and have sold homes to all different ages, races, religions, etc.  With this suburb being so convenient to Philly, you would be hard pressed to find close-minded or bigoted individuals...by and large.  Good luck!

Media, Swarthmore and Wallingford all have different feels to them.  While all are liberal (Swarthmore, being a college town, Media, being very hip and diverse and Wallingford, somewhere in between) they all have a different ambiance.  I'll start with Media, since I live here. I am a lesbian woman and have two children that go to Rose Tree Media school district. There is absolutely no discrimination with my children from their friends, friends parents, school, etc.  Both of my children have had all races as their friends.  Media is a hip little town with plenty to do within walking distance.  Its great to go out on a Saturday night and walk to to the restaurants and bars, not having to drive and having about 5 or 6 places to chose from.  Everyone who lives in Media raves about it.  It is progressive and involved socially.  Swarthmore has a small town, but the community is  more spread out and quieter.  The residents are very liberal. When I campaigned for Obama, for instance, every single door I knocked on was already voting for him. Which makes it less diverse.  I didn't know what I was doing there.  It has an artsy old-world feel, but not really hip and modern.  Wallingford is less describable, because it is so spread out with really no "center" to speak of.  It is very beautiful with lovely old stone homes.  I don't know very many people in Wallingford.  RTM school district is great. Both my kids love it.  Swarthmore schools are great too. Strathmore wallingford has a great music program.  Anyway, good luck.
