About the same as it was 15 years ago. It has a lot families these days and some of the best and most used kid's playgrounds. As far as crime, it is better than most of SF but it is still the City.
Have you checked crimemapping.com? It shows a lot of crimes. I used to live neaarby right on Mission and had no big issues except for a late night shootout.
pretty safe depending on which part but just like most of SF location is key. parts of bernal are near projects but most of it is nice. it has the best neighborhood feel (my opinion) and sense of community of any part of SF.
Bernal is great. I've lived here for 7 years... lots of families and a real sense of community. We haven't had any issues with crime but of course there are incidnets. It is the city.
